TV, Cinema, Video Examples.
Gus is a TV Advertising Copywriter – Australia based – that has worked across leading local and international brands. In Financial Services, Utilities, FMCG and more. Below is a very quick sample of three TV Advertising items he has worked on as a Copywriter that appeared both in broadcast on major networks and online. These represent large budget ‘big brand’ style ads, but Gus has also worked on smaller low budget advertising concepts and scripts and can tailor material to suit you.
HostPlus – We See Pluses
Client: HostPlus Executions: Cinema, TV & Online Video
Director: Stephen Carroll Producer: Tobias Webster Production Company: Exit Films Creative & Production: Stephen Hurley, Craig Sneddon, Eyvonne Carfora
The Background: This was written as an uplifting brand spot and is based around the idea that Hostplus Superannuation are there for life, with all of its ‘Pluses’. When it ran, website visitation and searches for Hostplus increased tenfold. Which goes to show powerful emotion and well-produced visuals can be highly effective. Hostplus has since risen in the ranks to become one of Australia’s biggest Superfunds. The ad is not directly rational or literal. It doesn’t talk to investment performance as most do. Instead it connects emotionally. In a way that sneaks up on you. Many of the surprises hidden in it, you’ll only see on repeat viewing. So watch out for those.
Momentum Energy – Row, Row
Client: Momentum Energy Executions: Cinema, TV & Online Video
Director: Mick Connolly Producer: Simon Hoy Production Company: Hub Productions Creative & Production: Andrew Panozzo, Fysh Rutherford, Matthew Ellis, David Tayles
The Background: Before this ad was made, no one knew who Momentum Energy was. Our brief was to let ‘mainlanders’ in Victoria know that Momentum Energy had arrived from Tasmania, bringing clean sustainable energy. It was the first of a series to feature two well-loved sea-faring characters over a 2 year period. Filmed around Phillip Island (VIC) in 4 days, the conditions were horrendous. With multiple heavy storms (and pleas from safety officers to stop filming during rough water shots), we persisted and this is the end result. The epic sea shanty was composed by Tristian Dewey and produced by Stephen Renfree at Bang Bang Studios (the booming drum was actually a steel washtub!) Incredibly talented people.
Make-A-Wish Lottery – Wishes
Client: Make A Wish Foundation Executions: TV & Online Video
Director: Dena Ashbolt Producer: Jennie McAlpine Production Company: Jump Productions Creative & Production: Patrick Rychner, Meagan Mills
The Background: This is an example of retail advertising done right. This spot communicates tons of info but still feels un-rushed and charming. Produced for Make-A-Wish Foundation in Western Australia, the child actors were magnificent on the day. Some of the cutest unscripted moments ‘snuck’ into this commercial, which is what makes it so interesting. We had some superb ‘mini-performances’, as well as a few nerves between takes, which is totally okay. It’s all part of working with kids (and their parents) on the day to ensure everyone delivers something special. You take the time, to get it right.
